Welcome to College Advice 101
It's Not Like When We Applied to College
For high school students and their families, applying to college now is very different than when their parents did it. The number of high school graduates and the percentage that now go on to college have increased significantly. At the same time, students are being subjected to aggressive marketing campaigns by colleges that seek to attract the most qualified, talented and broad range of applicants, often from across the country and abroad, from which to select their first year class. No wonder that students and their parents (and guidance counselors and college admissions officers) are feeling stressed!
My Best Advice
With the help of knowledgeable adults, including parents, guidance counselors and college admissions advisors (also referred to as independent educational consultants or IECs), students should
- reflect, assess and focus on who they are as individuals and learners
- identify school environments that support those values and attributes and whose philosophy and programs will further their goals and growth
- assess which schools are reasonable admissions matches and
- develop targeted application materials to those schools.
Our Work Together
What are the "best" colleges for you? What makes a college great? What kinds of colleges admit students with your academic profile? How does one begin to assess what is right for you?
In our work together, I answer these and many other questions. Together we intelligently navigate the complex college admissions process and explore opportunities to determine what is best and to yield options that are right for the student. Focusing on the elements that applicants can control, I demonstrate how they are the drivers with choices and options. I guide students and their parents in determining what outcomes they want to achieve and how to go about achieving them.
I assess which schools are likely to offer the student admissions based on his or her academic and admissions profiles and guide the student and his or her parents in the necessary steps to increase that likelihood. During the application process, I work with the student to develop an overall application strategy and materials that are authentic, comprehensive and targeted. I make recommendations to increase the effectiveness of the overall process and applications. And I support the family along the way and until the student has made the decision about which college to attend.
